01 Stonehenge and Bath tours
31 compared from €71 typically 11h 4.62 average
The classic, and it works: the stones in the morning, the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent after lunch, eleven hours door to door. Coach versions from €71, most around €94; the sixteen-seat small groups that add a village or Windsor cost nearly twice that and hold the top three places. Inner Circle access, from €165, puts you inside the stone ring at dawn or dusk when the site is closed to everyone else, and reviewers say it is the one upgrade worth paying for.
02 Cotswolds, Oxford and Windsor tours
25 compared from €46 typically 10h 4.58 average
Honey-stone villages, a college town and a royal castle, in various combinations. From €46 for Windsor alone in half a day, most around €112 for a full Cotswolds loop through Burford, Bibury and Bourton. Small-group Cotswolds tours rate above the coaches by a clear margin because the lanes are too narrow for a fifty-seater, which is the whole point of going. Oxford and Stratford combinations are a lot of driving for two short stops.
03 Harry Potter studio tours
5 compared from €106 typically 7h 4.35 average
The Warner Bros. studio in Leavesden with transport from central London, from €106, six to eight hours. Tickets for the studio alone are almost impossible to buy direct in school holidays, and the tour packages hold their own allocation, which is the real reason to book one. They rate lower than anything else on this page, and the reviews explain why: the studio gets five stars, the coach waits and the three-hour cap inside get two. Book for the ticket, not the ride, and pick the package that gives you four hours inside rather than three.
04 Kent and Sussex coast tours
8 compared from €89 typically 10h30 4.58 average
The white chalk cliffs at Seven Sisters or Dover, Canterbury cathedral, Leeds Castle, in ten to eleven hours. From €89, most around €125. The Seven Sisters tour by train and on foot rates second in the whole ranking and costs less than the coaches: you walk the cliff path instead of looking at it through a window. Bring real shoes and a layer; the cliffs are windy in August.
05 Downton Abbey and long-haul day trips
8 compared from €220 typically 14h 4.59 average
Highclere Castle, the house from Downton Abbey, from €220 on the few dates the family opens it, plus the fourteen-hour days to Paris by Eurostar or the Lake District by coach. Highclere rates well and sells out months ahead because the open days are so few. The Paris and Lake District trips are honest about what they are, six hours of travel for five on the ground; do them only if it is that or nothing.
